Artist Sin-ying Ho to Speak at The College of New Rochelle

Artist Sin-ying Ho will speak about her sculptural ceramic work at The College of New Rochelle on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 6:45 p.m. in Romita Auditorium in the Mooney Center. Ho’s work explores the “clash of cultures” between Asia and the West. After the lecture there will be a reception in the Mooney Center lounge for the artist. The lecture is sponsored by The College of New Rochelle School of Arts and Sciences Art Department.

Combining traditional Chinese blue and white porcelain materials with imagery drawn from contemporary culture, Ho manipulates the forms of the ceramic vessels by adding multiple images, icons, signs and symbols to the surface creating overlapping or juxtaposed narratives. To further emphasize the juncture of different references and cultural ideas, she also combines traditional hand-painted imagery with the use of new technologies such as computer-generated decals. This mix of modern and traditional ideas and various clay techniques provokes questions of identity and memory while paying tribute to the Chinese porcelain tradition.

Born in Hong Kong, Ho studied art in Canada, receiving her bachelor of fine arts degree at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She also studied ceramics as an exchange student at the Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, China. Her masters of fine arts degree is from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ho has had numerous solo and two person exhibitions in New York, Massachusetts, Canada, and China. She currently teaches at Queens College.

Ho’s sculptures are on view at the Castle Gallery as part of the Intersecting Editions exhibition which runs through November 2, 2014.
