Two College of New Rochelle volleyball players were recognized by the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) on Tuesday with weekly accolades. Junior Meghan King (New City, NY/Clarkstown North HS) was named HVIAC Volleyball Player of the Week, while freshman Indigo Flowers (Castro Valley, CA/Castro Valley HS) was named HVIAC Volleyball Rookie of the Week.
King had a record breaking week for The College of New Rochelle. The co-captain kicked off the week by becoming just the second Blue Angel to reach the 500 career kill plateau in the team’s win over Sarah Lawrence. The New City, NY resident followed up that milestone with a program and career-best 21 kill effort against Lehman College (against just three errors), hitting .383 for the match and adding 17 digs to increase her program-record double-double total to nine. On the week, which also included a thrilling five-set win over College of Mount St. Vincent that stretched the Blue Angels’ winning streak to a program best six in a row, King recorded a team-leading 54 kills (increasing her already program single season best total to 252) and 45 digs, good for second on the team. This marks the third time this season the conference has bestowed this recognition upon King.
Flowers, the quarterback of the Blue Angel offense all season, also etched her name in The College of New Rochelle record book last week, moving into the top spot in the single-season assist list, having totaled 490 thus far in 2013. She recorded 102 helpers on the week, including a 35-assist performance against Lehman College, setting a new four-set program standard. The Castro Valley, CA resident tallied two double-doubles on the week to raise her season total to seven, and posted a seven ace effort in the HVIAC win over Sarah Lawrence that moved the Blue Angels into a tie at the top of the conference standings. On the week, Flowers averaged 6.80 assists, 2.73 digs and 1.00 aces per set. This is the third time in the last four weeks she has received Rookie of the Week honors.
