Britney, Kim and Justin – Making Fun of Our Vapid Age

I swear I am not making this up.  You can check it out.  It was in the New York Post, just the other day.

A British merchant marine told the UK newspaper Metro that her company has been using Britney Spears’s greatest hits to ward off Somali pirates while sailing around the Horn of Africa. According to one Rachel Owen, the most effective songs have been “Opps I Did It Again,” “Baby One More Time” and “Toxic.” Funny that!  I don’t think I have ever reallyy heard her sing.  The stuff I have listened to has been so electronically altered and Auto Tone enhanced, that I have not a clue what she actually sounds like.  But I am glad her vapid lyrics and simple minded melodies have come to some use.  I am sure the pirates would rather be water boarded than accept such unspeakable horror.

Look, I am not a prude, and I am sincerely glad whenever someone makes a nice living.  Ms. Spears is attractive, can dance and has a nice, well that brings us to my next subject.  Kim Kardashian.

Again, no prude I, I enjoy her back as much as the next guy, maybe more (There, I did it again, one more time; pun intended), and I am glad she has used her assets, ahum, and cunning to make a nice living.   But I just think it is about time to ask ourselves what it is about vapid celebrities that has us pay them so much attention; or worse still, where they get their sense of entitlement from.  Again, in the local paper, there was a story about Kim’s fiancé, Kanye West, saying he thought his intended belongs on the cover of Glamour instead of the First Lady.  If he said Ripley’s Believe It or Not, I might agree.

As for Justin Bieber, he obviously can sing and has become bigger than Kim’s, well, you know.  But he is so full of himself and his style of music so vapid that the director of the Security Association for the Maritime Industry had this to say when  asked to comment on the use of Spears’s songs by his British colleagues: “ I ‘d imagine using Justin Bieber would be against the Geneva Conventions.”

Well, I for one am glad that neither Spears nor Bieber had come to the mind of Captain Phillips. I really enjoyed the movie and Tom Hanks was great.  Besides, I am against all forms of torture.
