Busy Day For Mount Vernon Police Nets 4 Illegal Guns In 3 incidents

Police say in addition to taking 3 potentially dangerous drivers off the roads, the hectic 24 hours took guns off the streets.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — The Mount Vernon Police Department's Violent Crime Unit detectives recovered a total of four illegal firearms during three separate incidents in just over 24 hours.

The first incident began on Thursday, shortly before 1:30 p.m, when detectives from the Violent Crime Unit spotted a vehicle wanted for leaving the scene of an accident. When the detectives attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver, 26-year-old Demarco Royal-King, fled and crashed into another car a few blocks away.

Detectives took Royal-King into custody and recovered a loaded handgun from the vehicle. Royal-King was arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court and is being held at Westchester County Jail on $20,000 cash bail.

The second incident took place on Friday, just before 2:20 p.m. This time, detectives from the Violent Crime Unit spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with a past robbery, parked and unoccupied, near West Broad Street. As detectives watched the vehicle, they saw a man, later identified as 23-year- old Rasheed Murphy of the Bronx, enter the vehicle's driver side. Detectives approached the vehicle, discovering that the vehicle was not properly registered, and Murphy was not properly licensed. Detectives recovered two loaded handguns from the vehicle.

Murphy was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court and is currently being held at Westchester County Jail on $35,000 cash bail.

The most recent incident, also on Friday, took place just before 8 p.m. Mount Vernon police received a notification from the Westchester County Police Real Time Crime Center about a car that had been involved in a shooting in the 47th Precinct, in the Bronx. The car was entering Mount Vernon. Detectives from the Violent Crime Unit found the vehicle stopped at the Conoco Gas Station on West Sandford Blvd, next to a man pumping gas.

As detectives approached the man, later identified as 20-year-old Geordan Campbell of Manhattan, he attempted to get into the vehicle and flee. Detectives were able to stop Campbell and after a brief struggle, were able to detain him. Detectives found a handgun inside the vehicle. Campbell was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, obstruction of governmental administration, and resisting arrest.

It later became apparent that Campbell already was wanted out of the City of Mount Vernon for robbery. He was arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court, where his bail was set at $50,000 cash for the offenses from May 19. An additional $50,000 cash bail was set for the robbery charge. Campbell is currently being held at Westchester County Jail, according to police.
