College of New Rochelle and Southern Westchester BOCES Team Up to Offer Teaching Courses

The graduate-level program will be offered at BOCES' Harrison location.

The College of New Rochelle is teaming up with Southern Westchester BOCES (SWBOCES) to offer CNR’s graduate programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Bilingual Education, the two announced.

The courses will be offered at BOCES’ Harrison location, and the first courses, to begin this summer, will be offered to K-12 general and special education faculty of the 32 Southern Westchester BOCES component districts ranging from Pelham in the South, to Greenburgh-North Castle in the North.

These programs fulfill recent requirements issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Part 154, to support teachers pursuing required certification in TESOL and Bilingual Education programs. SWBOCES will provide space in its Professional Development Center in Harrison for the programs, and faculty from CNR will teach courses on-site.

“This partnership leverages CNR’s innovative co-sponsorship model to provide public school faculty across Westchester County with advanced educational opportunities,” said Kevin Cavanagh, Vice President of Enrollment Management at CNR, in a statement. “We have been serving teachers of all experience levels in the Westchester area for decades, and will continue to develop models that are affordable and convenient to the teaching community. The College of New Rochelle ‘s faculty has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with SWBOCES’ teachers and we anticipate a great collaboration.”

Jacqueline O’Donnell, Assistant Superintendent for Regional Services, added, “This partnership with The College of New Rochelle will enable our teachers to be ahead of the curve in their districts and enrich their classroom curricula and environments. By supporting our teachers with these programs, we work towards our ultimate goal of best serving the needs of our students and families across districts.”

Dr. Richard Thompson, Interim Graduate School Dean at CNR, noted, “Grounded in educational philosophy and practice, CNR’s goal is to develop teachers who respect the full range of differences among their colleagues and students, from intellectual, social, and emotional, to physical, cultural, and spiritual. We see areas of high need in TESOL and Bilingual Education across New York State. Our holistic approach is particularly relevant to guide the training of teachers in those programs with faculty members who mentor, advise, and instruct teachers from day one.”
