Cuomo To Weigh Bringing AG In To Investigate Police Shooting

Friends and family of Kamal Flowers, who was killed Friday, have urged Cuomo to appointment the attorney general to take the case.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — More organizations are calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to appoint the state attorney general to investigate the police-involved shooting of Kamal Flowers Friday. The Interreligious Council of New Rochelle wants Attorney General Letitia James to take over the case in June 10 letter.

The council said that it believes an investigation by James' office will lead to transparency, the Journal News reported.

Cuomo's office said the request was received and is being reviewed.

On Wednesday, family and friends of Flowers gathered on the steps of New Rochelle City Hall to urge Cuomo to have James take over the investigation from the Westchester County District Attorney's Office.

A spokesperson for James said Tuesday that the shooting of Flowers was outside the parameters of the executive order signed by Cuomo. The order applied to deaths of unarmed civilians caused by law enforcement officers and cases where there is a question about whether the civilian was armed and dangerous when killed.

Flowers was shot and killed Friday after the car in which he was a passenger was stopped by police. Authorities said he ran from the vehicle, drew a handgun and attempted to fire it at an officer.

Police said a Ruger 9mm handgun, magazine and rounds were recovered.

New Rochelle police released an audio recording of the shooting as well as surveillance video from the neighborhood.

Mayor Noam Bramson said he supported having James take over the investigation.
