Dramatic LI Sound Boat Rescue Planned; Don't Worry, It's Just A Drill

That capsized vessel near Glen Island Tuesday a.m. doesn't mean boaters are in trouble — it's a joint training exercise.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Boaters on the Long Island Sound in New Rochelle and dog walkers at Glen Island Park will witness a dramatic rescue at sea on Tuesday, but don't be alarmed because it's all just a drill.

The Westchester County Police Marine Unit will be participating in a training exercise on the water in New Rochelle from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The training exercise involves a multi-agency marine response to a boat that has flipped over near David’s Island.

The U.S. Coast will be broadcasting a Notice to Mariners to alert them to the training exercise.

"Boaters on the Long Island Sound, and persons in Glen Island Park and elsewhere along the shore, may observe an overturned boat and multiple police boats operating in the area," Westchester County police officials said in a notice issued Monday afternoon. "Be aware there isno emergency. It is only a drill."
