Fordham Prep Confirms Person Killed by Train Monday Was a Student

The president of the school said the young man was a sophomore and that counseling will be available to students, staff and parents.

The president of Fordham Preparatory School confirmed in a message posted on the school’s website that the person killed after being struck by a Metro-North train Monday was a member of the sophomore class.

The Rev. Christopher J. Devron wrote Tuesday that the sudden death of the student had shocked and saddened the Fordham Prep community.

The student was struck by a train going northbound passing through the Botanical Garden station.

“We are in close contact with the young man’s family and have assured them that our prayers, sympathy and support are with them in their time of need,” he said.

Devron said that the school will be providing experts and grief counselors to meet with students, faculty, staff and parents.

“We will also host a parent meeting at which specialists members of the Prep’s Crisis Team will address their concerns and questions,” he said.

The sophomore is the second Fordham Prep student to be killed in a little over two weeks by a train. On Jan. 18, 16-year-old Owen Kelly walked in front of a Metro-North train at the Philipse Manor station.

The Journal News said the MTA was not releasing the name of the latest victim as of Tuesday.

Railroad police were continuing to investigate the incident. It caused massive delays because all four tracks had to initially be taken out of service, and then into the evening, service was limited to one track in each direction.
