New Rochelle Parks Are Ready for Memorial Day
The parks in New Rochelle, by and large, have recovered from Superstorm Sandy.

UPDATE—4:15 p.m., May 24, 2013: The City of New Rochelle announced that the beach at Hudson Park will not open Saturday, May 25, as scheduled because of heavy rain. The park itself will be open.

New Rochelle parks are being spruced up in advance of the Memorial Day weekend.
Whether Mother Nature will cooperate is out of the hands of the city's Parks and Recreation Commissioner William Zimmermann.
However, he and his staff have worked to mitigate the damage from from Superstorm Sandy.
"We are opening all facilities," Zimmermann said, though there are some limitations.
"We complete the stabilization and emergency repairs at Hudson Park and Five Islands," he said. "There is some remediation to go at Davenport Park," but it's passive recreation facility so it won't impact the public.
Zimmermann said there was no portion of Hudson Park beach that will not be open, but there will still be plenty of room to enjoy the shore. The parking lot, which was completely undermined during the storm, has been stabilized, and there is a fence that separates the rowing club, which has been condemned because of damage from Sandy, so the public cannot access it.
The beach at Hudson Park and the popular Beach Bar, operated by Tilted Kilt LLC, will be open weekends only beginning May 25. It will be open daily when the beach opens daily June 25.
Repairs to electrical lines and a transformer are still worked on at the New Rochelle Marina. There is one section where electricity still can't be supplied to some of the slips.
Zimmermann said he was excited because he was able to offer the public more in the parks than he thought he was going to be able to just a few months ago.
"I think it's going to be a good season, if the weather permits," he said.
Work continues on repairs at Glen Island Park. Crews have been working on the beach and surrounding structures. One portion of the park just north of the beach area that was heavily damaged by Sandy is still undergoing repairs and is not open to the public.
