New Rochelle Police Make Arrest In Connection With 'Grandparent' Scam
Breaking: Police set up a ruse to have the suspect come to collect cash at a New Rochelle home, where he was taken into custody.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A man who preyed on a grandmother's concern for her family was arrested after detectives convinced him that he needed to come to the jurisdiction to collect his ill-gotten gains, according to police.
On Friday, New Rochelle detectives arrested Jose Maldonado of the Bronx for felony larceny by extortion. The 51-year-old was involved in a scheme where a New Rochelle resident was contacted via telephone and told that her grandson was in custody and injured, and that she needed to get $30,000 cash to secure his release, according to police.
Investigators say Maldonado made several calls preying on the emotions of the victim and her concern for her grandson. She gave some money to the suspect, but eventually grew more suspicious.
