NYPD Officer Shot In 'Targeted Attack' In Yonkers

Investigators believe that a suspect fired several gunshots at the officer while he was sitting in his vehicle, and then fled the scene.

YONKERS, NY — Yonkers police are describing the shooting of an off-duty NYPD officer as a "targeted attack."

Yonkers police are investigating the shooting along the Saw Mill River Parkway.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. this morning, Yonkers police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of the Saw Mill River Parkway and Tompkins Avenue, and simultaneously, a call of a man at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm was received.

The crime scene was on Tompkins Avenue, just east of the Saw Mill River Parkway.

The area was cordoned off as the criminal investigation got underway. Units also met with the off-duty officer, who is in stable condition at this time, according to officials. Investigators believe that a suspect fired several gunshots at the officer while he was sitting in his vehicle, and then fled the scene. No other injuries or property damage have been reported at this time.

The officer is a six-year veteran of the NYPD, according to the NY Daily News. He was hit in the arm and managed to take himself to the hospital.

The paper reports that the shooter fired at least 13 rounds at the officer, who is assigned to the NYPD Court Section.

Yonkers police officials said the shooting appears to be a targeted attack on the officer at this time, and there is no standing risk to the general public.

Port Chester police said they were notified this morning by the Westchester County Real Time Crime Center that the suspect's vehicle may be in the village.

The vehicle was soon located by FBI Safe Streets task force members in the village.

The suspect had a local address which was put under surveillance. The Westchester County PD Special Response Team was requested for assistance in the event additional resources were needed. Working with Yonkers police, the Westchester County Police Department and the FBI, more intelligence was gathered and the suspect was taken into custody without incident by the FBI Safe Streets task force who had the area under surveillance.

Out of an abundance of caution, schools in the area were asked to delay dismissal.
