Operation 'Cat Scratch' Helps Thwart Catalytic Converter Thefts In New Rochelle
The New Rochelle PD program etches tracking information on the frequently stolen car parts, making theft less enticing and riskier.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A novel approach to curbing the growing nationwide problem of catalytic converter thefts employs a simple solution that could one day soon have catalytic converter thieves avoiding the city like the plague.
In December, the New Rochelle Police Department launched "Operation Cat Scratch."
The plan is simple. Using the facilities of the city’s Department of Public Works, serial numbers were etched onto catalytic converters of participating New Rochelle residents who have been victimized by the crime. That unique number is registered in a database that can be accessed by law enforcement when they recover a stolen converter.

Increased patrols, targeted efforts and special task force operations have already resulted in several arrests. Police say "Cat Scratch" is one more component of the department’s strategy to fight this type of crime.
The 20-minute etching process is non-invasive, and is free of charge. Officials said plans are already underway to offer this service to all New Rochelle residents in the future.
