Winter Storm Warning Issued, Schools Start Closings, Delays for Monday in Hudson Valley

Driving conditions are expected to be bad for Monday morning's commute throughout Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warming for the Hudson Valley for Sunday night and Monday morning, and some school districts have already begun closing school on Monday and calling for delayed openings.

Most northern Westchester districts have all canceled classes for Monday, as did The Harvey School in Katonah.

The Scarsdale, Hastings-on-Hudson and Ardsley school districts have called for two-hour delays, and Mamaroneck School District said it anticipates at least delaying its opening, but it had not made a decision by 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

Additionally, the forecast calls for sleet and freezing rain, which could leave a quarter of ice on top.

“If the snow/ice line stays closer to I-287… snowfall amounts over 12″ could become quite common,” writes HudsonValleyWeather.com. “We won’t know for sure until the storm is underway, so like the ice potential in the lower Hudson Valley… this will be a ’nowcasting’ situation.”

Additionally, Consolidated Edison warned that the snow and ice accumulations could bring down power lines:

Snow can accumulate on tree branches, causing them to snap and bring down power lines and knock customers out of service. In addition, road salt will mix with melting snow and could damage underground electrical wiring, possibly leading to outages.

Customers can report downed power lines, outages and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers should have their Con Edison account number available, if possible, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.
