Almost 3K Still Without Power On LI After Heavy Wind, Flooding
The morning commute was messy on area roadways Monday morning.

LONG ISLAND, NY — UPDATE: As of 4 p.m., PSEG Long Island said it is reporting that 2,879 of its approximately 1.2 million customers are still without power across Long Island Monday after Mother Nature packed a punch with high winds and heavy rainfall.
PSEG LI said it continues to make "strong progress" restoring customers after gusty winds and heavy rain brought down trees and heavy branches on wires, causing scattered power outages throughout PSEG Long Island’s service territory. The winds are expected to subside this afternoon — and PSEG Long Island expects to have the majority of customers restored Monday night.
As of 3:30 PM, PSEG Long Island had restored power to more than 20,000 customers since 12:01 a.m. Crews will continue to work safely and as quickly as possible until all outages are restored, PSEG LI said.

Strong winds and heavy rain, starting late Sunday night into Monday morning, caused the scattered power outages throughout PSEG Long Island’s service territory. The hardest hit areas include the townships of Oyster Bay, North Hempstead and Huntington, PSEG Long Island said.

As of 9 a.m., PSEG Long Island has restored power to more than 7,400 customers since 12:01 a.m., officials said, adding that crews have been working overnight and will continue to work safely and as quickly as possible until all outages are restored.
James Tomasini, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office at Upton said a coastal flood warning would remain in effect until the afternoon's high tide cycle at 6 p.m. for all of Suffolk except northwest Suffolk, where a coastal flood advisory would remain in effect.
A high wind warning remains in effect until noon across Long Island, he said.
With 1 to 2 inches of rain expected Monday, the total rainfall from the storm that blanketed the area Sunday into Monday is expected to be 2 to 4 inches, with higher amounts possible locally.
Temperatures are expected to range from the high 50s to lower 60s Monday, Tomasini said.
All PSEG Long Island employees have mobilized to support the restoration efforts, including more than 900 line workers, tree trimmers, surveyors and other field personnel. This includes the support of more than 180 mutual aid high voltage personnel, officials said.
PSEG Long Island reminds customers that, for safety reasons, its crews are unable to work in bucket trucks to make repairs during times of high winds.
PSEG reminded:
- Downed wires should always be considered "live"; individuals should stay as far away as possible from them, and do not drive over or stand near them. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour electric service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.
- Electric current passes easily through water; if you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
- Never use a generator or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.
