Dog Whose Owner Died Suddenly Could Soon Be Helping Vets
It's a happy ending for Luna, whose next chapter could mean bringing joy to veterans.

SOUTHOLD, NY — A dog whose owner died suddenly is set to embark upon her next chapter and could soon be helping veterans.
"She will be in a great home," said Southold resident Jill Franke. Franke said the dog, Luna, belonged to her friend Monique's father, who passed away unexpectedly — the two families have been close for years, since Franke's father was good friends with Luna's owner.
Monique contacted Franke on Sunday: "We found Luna a home," she said, adding that the Vet2Vet organization came to take the pup from the Bronx, where she had been living; Luna has an appointment Monday with Calvary Canine to potentially begin training, she said. The goal is that Luna will be trained to be a service dog, possibly helping veterans with the Vet2Vet organization in upstate New York, she said.

"It's nice to hear a happy ending," Franke said.
Luna is a "pretty pit mix . . . about a year old. She's sweet — and needs a loving home ASAP," Franke said, after her owner died suddenly recently.

Although her owner was originally from Southold, he moved to the Bronx when his wife died a few years ago; both daughters in the family attended Southold schools.
"Thanks for all your help," Monique said.
