Drive-In Movie Night Coming To North Fork This Month

With old school drive-in movies making a comeback, the North Fork community will soon have the chance to pack the kids in the car for fun.

MATTITUCK, NY — The new normal is set to include face masks, social distancing — and the return of a classic American pastime, the drive-in movie.

On the North Fork, a drive-in movie night, with a showing of "The Goonies," is planned for Wednesday, May 27, at the Strawberry Fields fairground, located at 1175 Middle Rd. in Mattituck. Gates open at 7:30 p.m.; the movie begins at dark. While the event is free, donations will be accepted for Community Action of Southold Town to help those in need.

A radio station to listen to the film will be provided upon arrival. For everyone's safety, those in attendance must remain in their vehicles at all times; no rest rooms or concessions will be available, so bring snacks.

"Our goal is to give everyone a little escape while offering something that can be safely done, given the circumstances," said Paul Pawlowski, co-owner of Cedars Golf Club, which is sponsoring the event along with Movies in the Moonlight, a Southampton-based company.

"My partner Tim Mcmanus and I, as well as Frank Zagarino, owner of Movies in the Moonlight are organizing and donating the event," he said.

Pawowski also thanked Southold Town for helping to facilitate the movie night at Strawberry Fields.

"Our common goal is to to just give people a safe night out — and for them to enjoy a good movie," he said.

When asked about future plans for other movie nights, Pawlowski said it's not something he or his partner are planning in the future but individuals can reach out to Zagarino directly to schedule events.

"We look forward to the movie night," Pawlowski said. "It’s a night to have a little fun."

Organizers also thanked front-line heroes for working tirelessly to keep the community safe.
