Greenport Girl Loses Life After Battling Genetic Disorder

Bethzy Lopez passed away Sunday at Stony Brook Hospital after fighting a disease that affected her heart and lungs.

A Greenport Elementary School student died Sunday of a genetic disorder.

“It is with deep regret, that I inform you that we have lost one of our young Porters today. Bethzy Lopez passed away today. She was truly an inspiration to all. She was just 7 years young. She fought a tough battle with the will to never gave up,” Joseph Tsaveras, Greenport Elementary School principal, wrote in a message to the district.

The disorder affected her heart and lungs, and prevented her body from getting enough oxygen, according to The Suffolk Times.

Sister Margaret of the North Fork Spanish Apostolate told The Suffolk Times she was used oxygen tank that had a tube with was inserted in her throat and she was the size of a 1 1/2-year-old child.

Bethzy, who had instructors come to her home since she was not able to attend school with her fellow second grade classmates; died at Stony Brook Hospital after fighting this disorder since birth, according to SoutholdLocal.

Sister Margaret told SoutholdLocal “She was funny, a teaser. She loved to paint her fingernails.”

She also told SoutholdLocal Bethzy was ”smart, speaking two languages.”

Bethzy is survived by her parents, Jose and Mirta, and her siblings Lucia and Genesis.

The services will be held at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, details are still being worked out.
