Greenport Students to Participate in 'Hour of Code'

Students in 4th, 5th and 7th grade will be participate in the nationwide learning event this week.

Computers are everywhere, but fewer schools teach computer science than 10 years ago and girls and minorities are severely underrepresented in this field. However, Greenport School District is on their way to change this.

Greenport 4th, 5th, and 7th grade students are joining in on the largest learning event in history: ”The Hour of Code”, from Monday, Dec. 8 to Sunday, Dec. 14.

“The Hour of Code is designed to demystify code and show that computer science is not rocket-science, anybody can learn the basics,” said Hadi Partovi, founder and CEO of Code.org.

The goal is to get as many students to try computer science during this week. During last year’s “Hour of Code”, 15 million students tried computer science.

Computer science was on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. President Obama, Shakira and Ashton Kutcher all kicked off the Hour of Code with videos. Over 100 partners came together to support this movement.
