LONG ISLAND, NY — Friday's burst of sunshine will be short-lived across Long Island, with rain and even the possibility of light snow in the forecast for the weekend.

According to James Tomasini, meteorologist for the National Weather Service Office in Upton, rain is expected to begin across Long Island Saturday afternoon and then increase Saturday evening and into the overnight hours before slowly tapering off Sunday, when a lingering chance of rain remains.

"The bulk of, and heaviest, rain is expected Saturday evening through Saturday night," he said.

Long Island-wide, about 1 inch to 1 1/4 inches of rain are expected across Long Island, he added.

A slight chance, about 20 percent, exists for snow late Sunday night, with a few flakes possible, Tomasini said. The greater chance of snow exists well north and west of New York City and in the lower Hudson Valley, he added.
