Man Charged With DWI After Crashing Into Utility Pole: Police

He swerved to avoid a deer and crashed into the pole before the vehicle overturned onto its side, police say.

MATTITUCK, NY — A Mattituck man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after crashing into a utility pole Tuesday night, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place at 6:30 p.m. on New Suffolk Avenue when Robert Goodale, 29, who was heading east in a 2018 RAM, reportedly swerved to avoid a deer, lost control of the vehicle, and struck the pole.

The vehicle then continued east and rollover over onto its passenger side, police said.

Goodale was determined to be intoxicated, charged with DWI, first offense, and placed under arrest, police said. Goodale was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for a medical evaluation and was subsequently processed at Southold Town Police headquarters and held for arraignment, police said.
