NORTH FORK, NY — A North Fork shelter will once again symbolize a haven for homeless dogs and cats headed to find forever homes.

According to Gabrielle Stroup, director of operations for The League — formerly known as the North Fork Animal Welfare League — another "lifesaving transport" is heading to the North Fork from Georgia and will arrive at the shelter's locations in Peconic and Aquebogue on Saturday.

A total of 36 dogs, puppies, and kittens will be aboard, she said.

Stroup, lovingly nicknamed the "puppy pusher" by friends and colleagues, has been on a mission to help the four-footed pets, many of whom come from kill shelters in other states and might have no other means of finding a second chance.

Last year, she said, The League took in 676 animals, with 561 adopted and 110 others picked up by their owners or the "trap-neuter-return" program — with some still waiting for their adoptive families to fall in love and bring them home.

The Peconic shelter is located at 269 Peconic Lane in Peconic and the Aquebogue site is located at 324 Church Lane.
