🌱 North Fork Daily: LI Roadway Repair + Opioid Settlement + Fire Save

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today on the North Fork.

(Patch Media)

Happy Wednesday, neighbors!

Leading the news today, Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced $157 million to tackle Long Island's pothole-pitted roadways and crumbling infrastructure. Patch has been highlighting the dangers and frustration posed by potholes and roadways in desperate need of repair — and we'd like to know what you think about the funding. Is it enough? Where should efforts be concentrated? Please send your thoughts, to be included in a future story, to Lisa.Finn@patch.com.

Also, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the first opioid settlements are set to be distributed on Long Island and used toward treatment and other life-saving programs. After the long years of an insidious scourge that took the lives of so many we love, this is the first step toward some semblance of justice, one meant to help with healing. As AG James said, the funding can't bring our loved ones back — but it can bring help to scores of others who may see new futures dawn and lives saved.

Finally, a proposal pitched for affordable housing in Cutchogue could be facing an uncertain future.

Until tomorrow . . . .

First, today's weather:

Breezy in the morning; sunny. High: 55 Low: 39.

Here are the top stories on the North Fork today

  1. 1st 'Historic' Opioid Settlements Distributed To Long Island: After a years-long battle and countless stories of heartache and death sparked by addiction, a ray of justice dawned Tuesday as New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced the first funds from "historic" opioid settlements to be distributed on Long Island. Long Island will receive a total of $46.9 million in the first round of payments, with $26 million allocated to Suffolk County and $20 million to Nassau, James said. (Patch)
  2. Resident Escapes Shelter Island House Fire That 'Consumed' Home: The homeowner said he had been working in the basement with a propane-fueled hand torch to repair a plumbing issue when a fire broke out in his workspace, police said. He was unable to extinguish the fire before it rapidly spread throughout the basement and continued throughout the entire home, police said. (North Fork Patch)
  3. Hochul Announces $157M To Fix Long Island's Pothole-Pitted Roadways: Long Islanders who've had enough of hair-raising, pothole plagued commutes on area roadways have some hope in sight: Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced a $157 million investment in pavement renewal projects islandwide. The work is expected to take place on some of Long Island's busiest roads this spring and summer, with an aim of easing travel and improving mobility and conditions for both Nassau and Suffolk residents. 4. Developer "shocked and blindsided" as board rejects North Fork project: A North Fork affordable housing project is on life support after the local planning board advised against it.
Rona Smith's Cutchogue Woods development at 15690 Middle Road in Cutchogue received disapproval from the Southold Planning Board last week, the Suffolk Times reported. The board claimed the 24-unit development was not supported by the town's comprehensive plan, citing the project's location in an agricultural conservation zoning district and its distance from the nearest hamlet center as reasons for not approving it, the Real Deal said.
