🌱 North Fork Daily: School Shooter Drill + Missing Teen + Custer

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today on the North Fork.

(Patch Media)

Hello, friends. I'm here with your Monday edition of the North Fork Daily.

This weekend marked the mass casualty incident drill at Greenport High School, with fire departments, ambulance companies, police and other agencies from across the East End coming together to ready for the unthinkable. Communication and collaboration can save lives during an active shooter event, organizer Chip Bancroft said — and while the event was wrenching, with the screams of students acting their parts in the simulation echoing in minds and hearts long after the drill event ended, the goal was to prepare all involved to best protect the children, should the threat become reality.

All the police, ambulance and fire personnel, students and teachers, as well as HUGS, Inc. staff who came to debrief the kids, should be commended for their commitment and steadfast professionalism. Speaking with the students, all who were there told me they wanted to participate, wanted to work proactively toward change; many told me they want to pursue careers in public service in the future. These students, they are the future — and every single person who participated in Saturday's drill had that one mission in mind: To keep them safe, so that their futures can unfold — and they can live long and healthy lives, reaching for the stars and their dreams, without danger or harm.

Until tomorrow. . . .
