GREENPORT, NY — For years, visitors to the Greenport village marina have been welcomed by Jeff Goubeaud, who manages the facility. He's known for his kindness, bright smile, and knowledge of local waters.

But most of all, said Kathy Twohig LaRosa, who has known him for years, Goubeaud is a friend to many. And as he faces a medical challenge, those friends are coming together, forming a circle of caring to help him through the coming months.

LaRosa, who has organized a GoFundMe, "Jeff's Double Lung Transplant," said Goubeaud has pulmonary sarcoidosis.

"His health has greatly deteriorated the past fie years and he is now on full oxygen 24/7. His only hope is a double lung transplant," she said. "For the past year he has worked with his doctors and finally secured a spot on 'The List.'"

Recently, Goubeaud had to move closer to Boston while he waits for the life-saving call.

Although a majority of his surgery and hospital stay will be covered by the United States Department of Veteran Affairs, Goubeaud is is required to have a home health team in place in Boston for the three to six months post transplant, LaRosa said.

While he doesn't have any immediate family, "he does have some extended family and friends that consider Jeff family, who will step up when his lungs arrive," she said. The team will be trained by the hospital's transplant unit on all post care and meds, she said.

LaRosa said she is asking for help to support Goubeaud's post-surgical care and the home health care team that needs to be to put in place. The monies raised will cover the out of pocket travel expenses for his home health team, and the hiring of a professional home nurse should he need that level of care, she said.

"Many of you have heard me speak of Jeff and his relationship with my family, especially my father. Jeff and my dad share many interests including sailing, birding and hanging out in boat yards," she said. "Jeff is a born and raised North Forker who only ventured off the island for college and the Coast Guard. He is an avid reader, bird photographer and small aircraft pilot. But most of all, Jeff is everyone's friend."

LaRosa thanked all who donated and added: "I'm really hopeful that this operation will restore Jeff's health and give him back his lifestyle."
