Owner 'So Grateful' For Help As Search For Missing Dog Continues

GREENPORT, NY — The search continued Saturday for a little dog lost since before the season's first snowstorm in Greenport.

According to Nicole McDaniel, Jax was reportedly spotted on Tasker Lane about 3:30 p.m. Saturday; that was the first sighting since Thursday, she said.

Friends and community members have rallied to help find Jax and get him home safely. "I am so grateful," McDaniel said.

McDaniel said her childhood dog Jax went missing Thursday around 11 a.m. from Linnet Street. He was also seen around noon Thursday on Cedarfields Drive, she said.

Jax is a 6-year old Bichon/Yorkshire Terrier mix; he is about 10 lbs. and while friendly, is very timid and skittish, she said.

McDaniel is imploring the community for assistance in locating her beloved family pet. "We really need some help finding him," she said.

McDaniel was let out to "use the bathroom" in the yard as usual. "He never runs. But a truck went by and spooked him," she said.

Although she believes Jax came back to the door of her family's home, he then "took off running" and still hasn't been found.

Jax, McDaniel said, was not wearing a collar and is not chipped.

She is currently in Florida and is stricken by the thought of her dog lost in a snowstorm when she is so far away.

"I'm devastated," she said. "I'm very upset — and the fact that this happened during a winter storm, I'm very concerned."

McDaniel was very worried during Friday's snow. "It's so cold outside. I cannot imagine what he is going through," she said.

While many have suggested that perhaps someone found Jax and has given him shelter, he is such a timid dog, she doesn't think he would have gone to a stranger.

McDaniel said family, friends, and the community have been out searching for hours, even bringing the other dogs from Jax's litter, his brother Mellow and his mom MJ, out to help.

"Please, continue to look," she said. "I really appreciate all the help we have received so far from so many people — and I am praying he makes it home safe."
