Police: Mattituck Man Arrested After Breaking Into Car and Stealing Wallet

The man was arrested after he used the stolen credit card at a phone store, police said.

A Mattituck man was arrested for breaking into a car and stealing a wallet in Riverhead on Tuesday afternoon, according to Riverhead Town Police.

Police received a report of a man who smashed a window of a parked car in the municipal parking lot north of East Main Street in downtown Riverhead shortly after 3:30 p.m.

The man reached into the car, stole a wallet from the car and then fled on foot west across the parking lot, police said.

After interviewing witnesses to the break-in, officers were provided a physical description of the man and immediately conducted a search in the downtown area.

The owner of the car also told police that a credit card in the wallet was just used at Simple Mobile Solutions on Griffing Avenue in Riverhead, police said.

Police in the area on Rail Road Avenue found a man fitting the physical description, who was identified by the witnesses as Shawn K. McAvoy, 31, and placed under arrest, police said.

McAvoy was charged with third degree criminal mischief, fourth degree grand larceny, and third degree identity theft, police said.
