UPDATED: NYPD Officer Shot in Head Dies From Injuries
Brian Moore, of Massapequa, was shot Saturday evening in Queens.

The New York Police Department officer from Long Island who was shot in the head Saturday night in Queens Village has died from his injuries.
Brian Moore, 25, of Massapequa, died at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center Monday, NYPD Commissioner William Bratton said.
In an emotional press conference Monday, Bratton called Moore “an extraordinary young man” whose death is “a great loss to his family, a great loss to this department, and great loss to this profession and to this city.”

Officers from precincts across the city lined up in a ceremonial salute as Moore’s remains were transported from the hospital Monday afternoon.
Patrick Lynch, President of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, said that the officers who lined up would have to go straight back to work with “sadness in their eyes” and “bravery in their hearts.”

Moore and his partner, Erik Jansen, 30, were inside an unmarked car Saturday evening when they approached a man who was ”walking and adjusting an object in his waistband,” Bratton said this weekend.
When the plainclothes officers, who were still inside their car, told the man to stop, he opened fire and struck Moore in the face. Jansen reportedly escaped unharmed.
Moore’s alleged assailant, Demetrius Blackwell, 35, is charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, the NYPD said Sunday. His charges will likely be upgraded in the wake of Moore’s death, according to reports.
Moore joined NYPD in 2010 and was part of the 105th Precinct’s anti-crime team. In his short career, Moore received two exceptional police service medals and two meritorious police service medals, honors Bratton said they “don’t give out easily.” The officer made more than 150 arrests while at NYPD and had “proved himself to be an exceptional young officer,” Bratton added.
Moore also came from a “police family,” Bratton said. The Long Islander’s father and uncle are retired NYPD sergeants.
A wake will be held for Moore on Thursday and a funeral will follow on Friday, officials said.
Moore graduated from Plainedge High School in 2007. The school is holding a vigil in Moore’s memory Monday at 7:30 p.m. on the football field. All are welcome and are asked to wear blue.
New York leaders and police departments from around the country are mourning Moore. In a statement Monday afternoon, Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the shooting a “deplorable act of violence that has robbed New York of one of its finest,” adding that “Moore put the safety of his fellow New Yorkers before his own, and we will remember his service with gratitude and pride.”
