'Remembering Saloman': Friends Help Family Of Man Who Died In Fall

NORTH FORK, NY — Days after a worker died after falling from the roof at a residential construction site in Orient, friends and the community are coming together to help his family.

A GoFundMe page, "Remembering Saloman," was created to help the family of Saloman Alfredo Cruz-Jiminez, both here and in Guatemala.

Jiminez, 38, who was working with a subcontractor's framing crew, came to the United States from his birthplace in Guatemala, "looking for work to fight for and provide for his children," the page said. "It was his dream that through his everyday efforts they would lack for nothing and could one day be reunited. While that dream is no longer possible, we can still honor this love by helping to support those he left behind in this difficult time. "

Cruz-Jiminez, who lived in Shirley, died after falling off the roof at a residential construction site in Orient last Wednesday, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place at 8:55 a.m. at the home on Orchard Street. Police, along with Orient Fire Department rescue, responded after a report that a man had fallen about 13 feet off the roof.

Cruz-Jiminez was found unconscious and not breathing with no pulse, police said. CPR was initiated, and he was transported to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital by Orient Fire Department, where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained from the fall, police said.

The incident was deemed accidental and turned over to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for any further investigation, police said.
