Seniors Come Together To Brighten Days Of Sick Children

Seniors at Peconic Landing made valentines for the children last week, hoping to bring smiles to children facing difficult times.

GREENPORT, NY — Seniors at Peconic Landing in Greenport used their hands and hearts to brighten the days of sick children at Stony Brook Children's Hospital recently.

On Feb. 8, approximately 12 residents gathered in the community's club room, armed themselves with glitter and paper doilies, and set out to create some beautiful, straight-from-the-heart valentines for the kids. All told, they created more than 30 valentines.

Heart shaped cookies and punch were enjoyed by all and the music of Louie Armstrong played as the seniors got to work crafting the sweet messages.

"I am a retired teacher, so children have always been at the top of my list. To me helping out was a no-brainer," said member Marilyn Hopkins, who made five valentines. "It was a joy. For the children in the hospital, the more we can do to help to ease their pain and make their days happier the better. I thoroughly enjoyed making them."

Added Robert Syron, Peconic Landing president and CEO, “We’re always looking for creative ways of reaching out to the greater community, so we thought why not spread some love on Valentine’s Day? Our members love to volunteer and take advantage of every opportunity to give back.”
