Those hoping for snow won't find a winter wonderland this weekend, the NWS says.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Kids hoping to break out the sleds and make snowmen this weekend on Long Island will most likely have to wait, experts said Friday.

A winter storm projected for Long Island is expected to be "mostly rain," according to Bill Goodman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office at Upton.

The rain is expected to fall Saturday night into Sunday, with "maybe a few snowflakes in Nassau County and western Suffolk," he said.

About an inch of rain is expected overall, Goodman said.

Strong winds of up to 25 to 30 miles per hour are expected, with gusts of up to 40 to 45 miles per hour, especially on the East End, Goodman said.

Rain could change briefly to snow Sunday, but with temperatures remaining in the 30s all weekend, that snow is likely to be just a coating on grass, not impacting roads, he said.
