St. Baldrick's: Through the Eyes of a 9-year-old Shavee

Ocean Avenue 3rd grader Patrick Sweeney's story of fundraising $7,399 for St. Baldrick's.

Here's a story that nine-year old Patrick Sweeney wrote when I asked him to tell me why he shaves for St. Baldrick's.  I find his account of what he does and why he does it so pure and sweet, and wanted to share...

Last year I started a team called the "Ocean Avenue Shavesters" for St. Baldrick’s.  We raised money for kids with Cancer by shaving our heads.  Last year it was only seven of us and we raised $7,399 and it was really fun.

This year me, my little brother Finn and some friends are going to do it again.   We are doing it for a great cause.  I am so lucky that the kids in my family have never had cancer.  But I did meet a little girl the same age as my younger sister Mackenzie who was born really really sick with Cancer.  Her name is Gwendolyn and I shave my head in her honor. I hope nobody gets as sick as she was even if I don’t know then and I’m glad she is okay now.

I am so happy to be able to do this with my friends and I hope we raise a lot of money.  If anyone at Ocean Avenue would like to join the team they would be welcome to.  Any grade, any class, any students and other family members or friends can join the team.   If you want to join the team you
can go to this website (http://www.stbaldricks.org/teams/mypage/80388/2013) and click “PARTICIPATE WITH THIS TEAM.”  I hope I see a lot of people there.
