Commack Man Overdoses While Driving, Causes Melville Crash: Police
The man struck a vehicle occupied by two young children Thursday evening, police say.

A Commack man overdosed on heroin while driving and crashed his SUV into a vehicle occupied by a two young children in Melville on Thursday evening, police say.
According to authorities, Michael Amico, 51, was recklessly driving a 2011 Subaru Forester southbound on Broadhollow Road, south of Spagnoli Drive, when the vehicle drove onto a sidewalk and struck a fire hydrant, which broke loose and hit a 2016 Land Rover at 6 p.m.
The Subaru then struck the Land Rover and eventually came to a halt on the sidewalk in front of 610 Broadhollow Road, approximately 1,500 feet from the original crash, police say.

Members of Melville Fire Department Rescue arrived to the scene and found Amico unresponsive in his vehicle due to an apparent overdose, police say. Responders administered Narcan and revived Amico, who was transported to Huntington Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The woman driving the Land Rover and her two young children, a boy and a girl who were seated in the rear of the vehicle, were not injured from the crash.

Amico was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
