In Elwood, Glenn ASL Students Lend A Helping Hand

Continuing a seven-year tradition, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s American Sign Language (ASL) students volunteered their time at Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf’s annual fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Every year, families and friends gather to celebrate the autumn season at the Mill Neck Manor Festival, where they can participate in traditional fall festivities. In spite of the rainy weather, community residents attended the event and volunteers, including Glenn ASL students, were ready to provide their assistance.

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School ASL teacher Nicole Correia, along with her students Michael Sgambati, Jacob Pagan, Casey Gross, Jenna Yeisley, Victoria Shanerman and Olivia Prohaske, volunteered in the packing and delivery station where they raised and donated $154 in tips to the Mill Neck Manor organization. In addition, parents Mrs. Prohaske and Mrs. Pagan also kindly volunteered their time at the event.

“The students had an opportunity to see what the deaf community is all about,” Correia said. “They were also able to use their sign language skills when necessary.”
