James H. Boyd Brings out the Polka Dots for International Dot Day

The day was inspired by the book that encourages students to "make your mark and see where it takes you."

Members of James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District celebrated a journey of self-discovery by dressing in polka dot clothing and dot stickers.

The International Dot Day assembly, held on Thursday, Sept. 17, brought students and faculty together to celebrate the global initiative that aims to promote creativity, collaboration and courage among young learners.

The celebration, led by Principal Dr. Denise Toscano, was inspired by the children’s book “The Dot” written by Peter H. Reynolds.

  • Students and faculty harmonious sang and waved their arms to the song “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly.
  • Students were dismissed to their classrooms where they continued the celebration by participating in International Dot Day themed lessons and activities.
  • Students received a bracelet with the word “believe” to encourage them to remember the story and believe in themselves.

“Make your mark,” Toscano said. “You can all do it if you work really hard and know that we believe in you.”
