Library Mural Focuses on First Responders

The Northport-East Northport Libraries unveiled a mural exhibit on Friday that features images of 9/11 first responders.

The  revealed panoramic mural exhibits on Friday to commemorate the more than 50,000 first responders from across the country who came to New York City after the September 11 attacks.

The Northport branch mural is 72 by 2 feet, the East Northport branch mural is 48 by 2 feet, and both are composed of large format images of 9/11 first responders at the World Trade Center.

“Most people think of first responders as the firemen and the policemen, but they were all kinds of people," said mural creator and Department Head of Community Services MaryEllen Moll.

"Many of them went to the city without knowing anything about what had happened. All they knew was that there had been an explosion. They didn’t know there was a plane, they didn’t know about anything, they weren’t getting any news feeds. They just ran in there and helped.”

The exhibit will be open through the end of the month and ties in with Northport branch's Sept. 14 program at 7 p.m. featuring representatives from Stony Brook University's World Trade Center Program Oral History Project. First responder Steve Pappas will be sharing his story with the audience.
