Rock Out Apps, a Blauvelt-based mobile app developer, is taking its first step into the market today with the release of “Slippery Seal.”
The side-scrolling game – $1.99 for the iPad/iPhone/iTouch and available at the Apple App Store on March 30th, 2012 – follows Slippery, a loveable harbor seal, as he swims from San Francisco to Alaska.
Along the way, Slippery dodges sharks, dines on clams and interacts with other denizens of the sea.

ROA believed they could build a better app for kids than what was out there.
“They were so simplistic we were not that impressed. We wanted to do an app that was controlled by the user in a way that hasn’t been done before.” said Kevin Lynch, the company’s CEO.
Lynch, of Blauvelt, is the treasurer at the Lunt Fontanne Theater in New York. The other partners, Paul Conway of Tappan and Timothy Morales of Blauvelt have worked in the entertainment, tech and videogame industries.
The company spent more than $50,000 just to develop “Slippery Seal.” “The process in designing a game is far more involved than people would ever think. It’s like building a house, where the foundation needs to be perfect before taking on other areas. But if done correctly it’s an exhilarating process.” says CTO Paul Conway
The complex code that operates the app’s side-scrolling mechanism was key to the development of the game and helped the game stand out from the rest of the games on the iTunes market. They worked with a video game artist who previously worked with major game developers in the past to design the game’s distinctive oceanographic look and Northern Pacific coastal and city scenes.
Rock Out App’s primary goal was to entertain the 10-to-20-year-old age group but after having tested with a group of fifty plus users who ages ranged from 6yr olds to 40yr + they realized that it was a game that will entertain and educate the masses.
Lynch cited the Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” as an inspiration brought to his attention by CTO Paul Conway who has worked for companies such as NBC Universal and the NFL.
“We wanted kids playing the game to learn something,” Lynch said. “At least if a kid is wasting time he’s also learning something without realizing it.” It is then that they brought in lifelong friend Tim Morales as the COO who’s has over 20yrs experience in the technology industry and has assisted many startups turn into successful companies. This was a sure fit for ROA.
Lynch said a “Slippery Seal” prequel and sequel are in the works. The games will likely flesh out Slippery’s early life at an aquarium and continue his adventures in the Caribbean.
“The beauty of the seal is that it can appear in any ocean in the world,” he said. SLIPPERY SEAL is available starting today in the iTunes market.
