"The Lincoln Flag".. a National Artifact .. just a short drive !
The eve of April 14,1865 at Ford's Theater in Washington,D.C. leading to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln would change our history. Take a short drive and see "The Lincoln Flag".
I found a major piece of American Civil War era History recently, and have to share the find with you, and it's only a short drive over to Milford, Pa. to see for yourself. Pretty exciting and so short a drive to actually see for yourself.
Our American Civil War ( 1861-1865) has in my mind always been wrapped in the rich lore and history of the man we immediately associate with the war and the times..President Abraham Lincoln. Living just 5 days after the first surrender by Robert E. Lee ( he only surrenders one Confederate Army keep in mind), I like to think Lincoln himself was at least feeling a bit of peace when he was martyred after 4 long and unseen years of an incredibly bloody struggle.
The facts be told he had several stacks of hate mail and threats on his life from Southern sympathisers, and was quite aware of the chances he took when he attended the play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater on Good Friday, April 14, 1865. Fate would have it that Grant himself and his wife Julia who were originally to accompany Lincoln and his wife Mary to the play would instead leave Washington earlier than scheduled ( Julia Grant plainly stated to "Sam" Grant she did not want to spend an evening with Mary Todd Lincoln. The Lincoln party will have an escort, a Major Rathbone who will be wounded later during the assasination.

The key here is after the assasination, a 36 star U. S. flag was placed under the bleeding head of the President..something I had heard about many years ago.
This flag was not lost but actually kept by the family who originally owned the flag and passed along, and finally donated to the museum in Milford, Pa.

This flag is on display in this museum, and a short drive in the country to view this national artifact is exciting and certainly worth the short drive.
