Crash on Route 303 Killed Bicyclist

The Congers resident was hit Sunday by a Tappan Zee Express bus in West Nyack.

The accident that closed Route 303 Sunday afternoon north of the Palisades Center took the life of a Congers man.

Clarkstown police released this statement:

On August 16, 2015 at approximately 3:03 PM the Clarkstown Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a bicyclist on Rt. 303 and N. Palisades Center Dr. in West Nyack.

The vehicle, a 2005 Tappan Zee Express Bus, appeared to have struck a male bicyclist while the bus was making a left turn onto Rt. 303 to travel northbound.

The bicyclist, Edward Brophy, 77, of Congers, had severe injuries and was transported to Nyack Hospital. Mr. Brophy passed away at the hospital.

The driver of the bus, male, 47, of Spring Valley, was not injured. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the accident.

The Clarkstown Police Accident Investigation Team is conducting an investigation. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time. Rt. 303 was closed due to the investigation for approximately 6 hours. The road reopened at 9:00 PM.
