Meet Sukey Molloy

Nyack's Molloy is a celebrity when it comes to entertainment for youngsters

Long-time Nyacker Sukey Molloy is known throughout Rockland—and the county—for having a way with youngsters. As an award-winning creator of children's DVDs and CDs, her name is a familiar moniker in local households.

Molloy started her flagship music program PlayMoveSing in Nyack in 2004, after having taught movement classes to children in New York City for several years prior. In 2005, she and Nancy Ferst co-founded PlayMove&Sing Inc.—a company built on the belief that very young children learn more about themselves, and the world around them, through movement discovery and physical activity.

Now, PlayMove&Sing Inc. creates interactive CDs, DVDs, audio picture books and musical play activities to promote learning through active viewing and Sukey’s award-winning music.

“I feel there’s room in today’s video market to include slower-paced videos for children that are a little less stimulating,” Molloy says, describing her motivation to create the DVDs. “I wanted to create a series for children that offers the opportunity to interact and participate while viewing, and to directly engage children in physical play."

"The songs and characters are designed to highlight specific themes from nature and activities from every day life," she added. "I hope Sukey’s Circle! encourages children to move their bodies while they watch and listen—and that it is inviting to parents and siblings as well!”

And then there are the classes themselves. PlayMoveSing courses—or “Sukey Class,” as my daughter Zoe fondly calls it—are a rite of passage for young children in Nyack. In class, they learn the fundamentals of music in a circle setting complete with colorful and unique instruments. A gym component is also introduced with free play and instruction on bright, soft, gym equipment, all age appropriate.

Her work has won the Children’s Music Web Award, the NAPPA Award, and the Mom’s Choice Award. And beginning May 9, Sukey Molloy is launching free streaming of Sukey’s Circle!—so parents and kids can check it out online, gratis.

Visitors to Sukey’s Circle! PlayMoveSing website will also be able to interact with the series' lovable characters, Sunny and Tick Tock, and are encouraged to move and sing along while they listen, watch, and participate. Kids will also be delighted to discover downloadable coloring pages, lyric sheets for selected songs and an entire line of products that includes puppets, picture books and art play kits.

There is also an opportunity on the blog and website for parents to leave their comments for Sukey.

“I'm looking forward to hearing comments from all those whose children have watched the Sukey’s Circle! episodes on playmovesing.com," Molloy said.
