Nyack Bear Gets Trip to the Catskills

NYACK, NY — Want to know what happened to the bear that was running around the village on June 1? The Orangetown police and animal control officers called in the New York Department of Environmental Conservation after they treed the bear in a back yard.

The DEC's Environmental Conservation Officer Melissa Burgess called DEC Biologist Matt Merchant, a bear specialist, and his team, and they responded with bear relocation supplies and additional staff.

"DEC Wildlife staff successfully tranquilized, captured, and tagged the young bear before loading the animal into a trailer for relocation in the Catskills, where he can resume his life in the wild," DEC officials said.
