Croton students take Part in United Nations Convention
Students sang at the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School fourth-graders were part of a global celebration of children’s rights at the United Nations in New York City on Nov. 20.
The fourth-grade chorus was invited to sing, along with two other school choruses, during the 25th anniversary celebration for the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
“A former CET resident artist, Therese Folkes-Plair, was responsible for getting this incredible invitation,” said music teacher Marlena Peters.

Folkes-Plair serves as co-chair of the UN’s Committee on Children’s Rights.
“The children sat through the hour and a half briefing in which remarks were made by various groups and individuals advocating for children’s rights,” said CET Principal Kelly Maloney. “The message that was communicated by those who spoke was that children have rights, no matter who they are, where they live, what their culture is, or whether they are rich or poor; and that children’s voices must be heard.”
