Flooding As Severe Storms Hit The Hudson Valley

Flooding is reported in Rockland and Westchester counties: UPDATE

UPDATE 9:15 a.m. — Flooding during the severe Saturday morning thunderstorm has affected several communities.

North Greeley Avenue is closed between King Street and Maple Avenue in Chappaqua due to flooding, New Castle police report.

Westchester County officials at 9:09 a.m. reported the Bronx River Parkway partially closed. Other parkways in the county are open but water is ponding on their surfaces.

More storms with heavy rain are expected this afternoon, forecasters say.


UPDATE 8:29 a.m. — The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Storm Warning for south and central Westchester until 9:15 a.m. With 2 to 5 inches of rainfall since the start of the month, the river basins of the Lower Hudson Valley, Northeastern New Jersey and Southwestern Connecticut are particularly vulnerable to flash flooding, the National Weather Service said.

At 823 AM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Astoria, or over RFK Bridge, moving northeast at 20 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Expect damage to trees and power lines.

This severe thunderstorm will be near...

  • Great Neck and City Island around 845 AM EDT.
  • New Rochelle and Manhasset around 850 AM EDT.
  • Port Washington and Sands Point around 855 AM EDT.
  • Scarsdale around 900 AM EDT.
  • Glen Cove and Rye around 905 AM EDT.
  • Port Chester and Oyster Bay around 915 AM EDT.

8:15 a.m. Saturday: Westchester and Rockland counties are under a Flash Flood Warning.

Most vulnerable: areas along quick responding creeks, streams and small rivers that are already running at above normal levels for this time of year.

At 8:14 a.m., Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Yonkers, Stamford, Norwalk, New Rochelle, White Plains, New City and Port Chester.

A Flash Flood Watch is in place for Dutchess, Orange, Putnam and Ulster counties through Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service said numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop over the areatoday into tonight. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour arepossible. An average of 1 to 2 inches of rainfall is likely across much of the region, with locally 3 to 5 inches possible through tonight.

Areas of urban and poor drainage flooding are likely, with flash flooding possible in locations that experience successive thunderstorms moving through.
