Flash Floods Then Frigid: The Hudson Valley's Weekend Weather

Up to two inches of rain and then a brief drying-out period for the region. Here's the latest.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — With heavy rain on the way, the flood watch will be in effect from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday. And then colder air will pour into the region for the weekend.

Rain began falling Friday afternoon and it will pick up in intensity after sunset, which is depressingly at 4:43 p.m.

The heaviest rain, along with a chance of thunderstorms, is expected between 7 p.m. and midnight. The rain will taper off during the overnight hours. Rainfall amounts will generally average between 1 and 2 inches, however locally higher amounts will be possible.

The combination of heavy rainfall and leaf clogged drainages will pose a threat for flash flooding across the island, the NWS says. Across low-lying coastal areas, rising tides Friday evening will pose an enhanced threat for flash flooding.

The weather will be dry for the rest of Saturday and Sunday. And the brisk wind — gusts up to 35 mph — will help things dry out quickly.

Of course, they'll make it feel even more wintry. AccuWeather calls what's blowing in "December-like air."

"Temperatures will drop to the middle 40s during the weekend," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Mike Doll.
