Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For Hudson Valley

Treacherous downpours are possible for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.

UPDATE 1:30 p.m.: The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties at 1:26 p.m. The biggest threat Wednesday afternoon and evening is heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding.


The National Weather Service updated its predictions of thunderstorms early Wednesday morning. The threat is very heavy rainfall with resulting flash floods.

The storms yesterday missed the Hudson Valley for the most part.

"One of the severe storms on Tuesday afternoon tracked over New York City and may have played a roll in a crane collapse in Manhattan. There were no injuries, according to the New York City Fire Department, but the collapse did cause road closures in the area," said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.

For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties, the NWS says:

There is a risk of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts this afternoon and this evening. The higher chance of severe weather is across the Lower Hudson Valley, Northeastern New Jersey, and New York City. Localized flash flooding is also possible.

For Dutchess and Ulster counties:

There is a chance of thunderstorms today. Thunderstorms will be capable of producing very heavy rainfall, which may lead to flooding of urban, low lying and poor drainage areas. An isolated flash flood cannot be ruled out. In addition, thunderstorms may produce strong winds, with the best chance of severe thunderstorms with damaging winds from the Capital Region to the south and east.

Dutchess and Ulster also have a HWO for more thunderstorms coming up on Saturday and Tuesday.
