The Constitution Pipeline project has been dropped, a crucial and conclusive victory for the Hudson River and New York, says Riverkeeper.

To the Editor:

Williams Partners LP, the gas company leading the partnership behind the Constitution Pipeline says it has abandoned the project following years of legal challenges by Riverkeeper, Earthjustice and many environmental and community partners. The proposed 124-mile fracked gas pipeline was slated to run through New York and Pennsylvania.

Riverkeeper is gratified that it has been announced that the Constitution Pipeline project has been scrapped.

This pipeline would have carried fracked natural gas across 251 waterbodies — including 89 trout spawning streams — and through many unique and sensitive ecological areas such as old-growth forest and undisturbed springs, which provide vital habitat and are key to local ecosystems.

Over many years, Riverkeeper and our partners have fought and won numerous legal battles to stop the building of this pipeline, and the abandoning of this project is a crucial and conclusive victory, not just for the Hudson River and New York State, but for all states and communities around the country that seek to prevent major gas infrastructure projects from harming them, their waters and their climate.
