Flash Flood Watch Issued For Hudson Valley: UPDATE

The next storm arrives Friday with heavy rain and gusty winds and falling temps while bringing lake-effect snow to western New York.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties. It replaced the earlier hazardous weather outlook.

* Low pressure will approach the tri-state area on Friday and pass through during Friday night. This will bring a period of moderate to heavy rain to much of the area.
* Rainfall is expected to begin Friday afternoon into early evening and become moderate to heavy during the evening. The rain then becomes lighter and tapers off during the overnight hours. The heaviest rainfall is expected to occur in the evening. Rainfall amounts will generally average between 1 and 2 inches, however locally higher amounts will be possible. The combination of heavy rainfall and leaf clogged drainages will pose a threat for flash flooding across the watch area. In addition, quick water level rises are possible across small rivers, streams, and creeks, with flooding of adjacent areas.

"Another 1.0″ of rain appears likely, as this storm system pushes though," said Alex Marra and Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. "The further south you go… the better the chances of the higher rainfall amounts."

The fallen leaves everywhere could not only expand flooding but also create tricky travel conditions.

"The timing of the steadier, heavier rain in the I-95 corridor, from D.C. to New York City, means that the evening commute could be troublesome," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Steve Travis.

(At least the storm will only bring rain our way — it will dump lake-effect snow on western New York.)
