Ossining group to represent Jane Goodall Institute at this year's United Nation Day of Peace

Youth-led environmental education group to showcase Children's Peaceful Garden

Something Good in the World (SGITW), a local leader in sustainability education has been selected to represent Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots program at this year’s United Nations Day of Peace event on September 16th in New York City.

In April of this year, SGITW received a grant from the Roots & Shoots program to enhance their bee sanctuary - comprised of an apiary and a bee friendly garden - which is an important part of the organization’s award-winning Children’s Peaceful Garden project.

In a continuation of their partnership, SGITW was selected to represent Goodall’s world-renowned community action and learning program at the International Day of Peace at the United Nations. The event is celebrated around the world as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace among all nations and peoples.

“Our Children’s Peaceful Garden aligns perfectly with the Roots & Shoots ideal of a youth-led grassroots project”, said Barbara Sarbin, SGITW’s educational director. “It’s also a beautiful, living, breathing example of the United Nation’s theme of peace and sustainability. We’re honored to be selected to represent such an amazing organization and to share our vision for a more peaceful and sustainable world on a global stage.”

Sarbin will bring a contingent of young environmentalists to the event. All have helped plan, plant, cultivate, and grow the Children’s Peaceful Garden at some point in their lives. Since the project is intentionally small-scale and hands-on, Sarbin hopes that gardens like theirs will be replicated in woodlands, backyards, and schoolyards, all around the world.
