Ossining Neighbors Oppose Sunshine Home's Expansion Plan
The children's medical facility is in front of the New Castle planning and zoning boards.

A group of residents and environmentalists is concerned by the Sunshine Children’s Home’s plan to expand at 15 Spring Valley Road, on the border with New Castle and Ossining.
Sunshine Children’s Home is a 54-bed licensed nursing facility that specializes in the care and treatment of medically complex children who require post acute, rehabilitative care.
Officials there have applied to the New Castle Planning Board to increase the size of their facility.

“PROPOSED FACILITY WOULD BE 1.5 TIMES LARGER THAN THE AVERAGE WALMART, AND IT’S IN A WOODED, RESIDENTIAL, RURAL NEIGHBORHOOD,” the residents’ group says on its website.
The residents’ group argues that the home is asking for enough new square footage that it could under state guidelines increase to a 500-bed facility.

Here’s the current status of the approval process for the project, according to New Castle Town Supervisor Rob Greenstein:
- The New Castle Planning Board will hold a public hearing on Sept. 16 for the Tree, Wetland, and Steep Slopes permits that are being requested by Sunshine Children’s Home.
- The town’s Zoning Board of Appeals must make an Environmental Determination for the Special Use Permit in accordance with SEQR.
