"Rebuilding Nepal" is new Maryknoll exhibit

Mission work before, after last April's major earthquake is featured until June.

Rebuilding Nepal is the newest exhibit at the Maryknoll Museum of Living Mission at the Maryknoll Mission Center, 55 Ryder Road in Ossining. The exhibit places the spotlight on the mission work of Maryknoll Father Joseph Thaler before and after last April’s major earthquake.

Museum hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Admission is free. Click here for directions.

Father Joe is from Dayton, Kentucky. He first served in mission in Nepal during 1977. He returned to the U.S. during 1991 and then he was assigned again to Nepal during 1999. Over all these years, he has been an advisor to the Nepal government in matters relating to health research, has been associated with programs for the mentally disabled and has fostered educational/scholarship programs for youth. He also is involved with health camps for poor Nepalese and oversees retreats to various religious communities within the country.

Dramatic Photos

Rebuilding Nepal can be seen until early June. The exhibit describes the day that the ground shook and then takes the visitor to cities and villages to witness the devastation. To help Nepal rebuild, Father Joe and his staff continue to work closely with all faiths to deliver supplies, provide food, rebuild homes and re-establish schools.

“It would be difficult to find a better group of folks to work with over these many years,” said Father Joe. “They have been very faithful and very hard working and have made the good name of Maryknoll known in Nepal. During this time, it is a very special honor to join together in inter-religious dialogue at its best.”

The exhibit includes a sampling of dramatic photos of the landscape and pictures of the beautiful smiles that adorn the faces of the wonderful people of Nepal. Many of these moments were captured by Father Joe.

Rebuilding Nepal also provides information about the relief work and shares the local enthusiasm to restart the Maryknoll programs halted by the quake. The programs and the earthquake relief work have been made possible by Maryknoll’s donors and the employees who contribute daily to Maryknoll’s work in mission.
