Snow Won’t Stop Ossining from Making Sure that Everyone has a Good Thanksgiving
For over 25 years, the First Presbyterian Church, 34 South Highland Avenue (opposite the Ossining High School) has celebrated Thanksgiving by cooking a turkey dinner, including all the trimmings, for anyone who showed up. Many people came for good food and companionship. This year is no different. 45 people have promised to bring the ingredients, and over 50 people have pledged their time to decorate, cook, and serve the meals to those who come to the church’s Fellowship Hall, entered from Maple Place. Dinners will be delivered to home-bound folks.
This Wednesday and Thursday in the church’s kitchen, 100 pounds of potatoes will be peeled, boiled and mashed; onions and celery and mushrooms will be chopped and added to bread crumbs for stuffing, gravy will be made from the turkey drippings. 14 turkeys will be carved, white meat separated from dark. Sweet potatoes with marshmallows, cranberry sauce, rolls, and green beans complete the main course. Desserts will be apple and pumpkin pies, with whipped cream if guests want it. Does this sound delicious? Come at noon on Thanksgiving Day and find out. If you want a meal delivered, call the church office at 941-0540.
This year’s celebration honors Marion Farrell, who ran the annual Thanksgiving Dinner for more than two decades. Sadly, Marion died this year. The First Presbyterian, Scarborough Presbyterian and Briarcliff Congregational Churches are running the feast this year. Ken Jenkins, Westchester County Legislator, District 16, has volunteered to serve Thanksgiving dinner.

“The need in Westchester is great but often invisible. Our priority is ensuring a good quality of life for all County residents. This dinner is symbolic of our community’s willingness to make this a reality”, stated Mr. Jenkins
In Ossining, residents have much to be thankful for, a beautiful community situated on the majestic Hudson River, award winning schools and an environment where diversity flourishes. However, issues of poverty prove challenging for many. Ossining takes quality of life and the well-being of its residents seriously. It’s reputation as ‘the volunteer spirited town’ is rooted in a longstanding tradition of faith based organizations, community groups and concerned individuals uniting to address issues of social justice - working collaboratively to ensure affordable healthcare, housing and good education are accessible to all residents.
